True, sorry.

First, it was on my " rat bike "( with 52t-42t) and I'd just change rings. 28 is the lower ring allowed and a 69/107 mm BB gives perfect chain line and very low Q factor.

Hi Trefix,
I'm not certain, but that Stronglight 80 you mention might have an 86mm BCD. Anyway 42 and something in the 20's is a nice double.

I went with the 42t ring to give me 67" gearing with a neutral chain line, as that's where I ride most of the time. I like not having to think about front ring changes and don't mind the large steps between gears as they are only an issue if you are racing. For a road bike I'd probably go with a 48/34 compact double with a 12/27 cassette.

On my heavy commuter I run a Sugino XD triple with 46/36/26. I keep 11-32t in the back. The stock crank had a 50t, but I never used half of the cassette. The whole setup is 8 speed friction via ultegra bar end shifters.

I suppose a 42t would split the difference between my middle and big ring, but my setup has very easy front shifting as is.

My tastes for a road bike are totally different. I constantly am shifting the rear, but only sparingly shift up front. In that case, I like a lot of range on the front rings, but tight increments on the rear cassette.
